Note / Decision Systems
No Name Today Is a Valid Answer
Most decision systems are designed to produce output. The hardest thing to build is a system that can say nothing clears the bar — and mean it.
Most decision tools are designed to output. The idea that output might be the wrong answer is not in their logic.
NEO5 had the same problem. Every version would force rank #1 into the hero slot, regardless of whether rank #1 actually met the bar. The product felt broken if it didn’t produce a name. So it always produced a name.
One of the last things we built was a state called “No Name Today.”
We eventually made “No Name Today” a first-class product state. It means: the evidence is stale, the expectation gap is unclear, the bar is not met. No name deserves your next hour. Cash is the correct posture.
Once we shipped it, we realized it should have been there from the start. Because most of the time, most investment situations do not clear the bar. The market has been pricing in most of the obvious opportunities. The honest answer is usually wait.
The same is true outside investing. Most decisions don’t need to be made today. Most opportunities are not actually urgent. Most content ideas don’t clear the bar this week.
The systems we build don’t tell us this. They are designed to produce output. So they do.
